The Educational Testing Service (ETS), makers of the GRE exam, just announced a major GRE Summer Sale! If you’re thinking about taking the GRE exam in order to apply to graduate school or an MBA program, now is the time to lock in the lower prices. It’s not every day that the GRE goes on sale, so let’s dig into why they released it and cover some frequently asked questions about the sale.

Why is the ETS having a GRE Summer Sale?

The ETS isn’t one to typically have sales, so why now? When you look at the timing, it’s clear that this sale is related to the release of the new shorter GRE exam on September 23, 2023. You can only qualify for the Summer Sale if you sit for the old, longer test before September 20, 2023. This makes sense – there is a lot of excitement around the new GRE format, but many people have been preparing for the old format before the new format was announced. ETS wants to encourage those people to still take the old GRE at the appropriate time, and is giving them an incentive to do so.

However, you can then use the retest code to take the GRE again between September 20, 2023 and December 31, 2023, which will be the new GRE. Why do this? First, it gives test takers who were planning to take the GRE during this transition period a way to have their cake and eat it too – they can take the old GRE that they were preparing for, and they can take the new GRE to see if that affects their score. And second, it also encourages a cohort of test takers that have taken both tests, which will give ETS valuable data that they can use to make the new GRE even better.

How much can I save with the GRE Summer Sale?

Those taking the GRE test before September 20, 2023 can save $60 on their first GRE test. They can also save $50 more on a retest taken before December 31, 2023. If you take two GRE tests in these time windows time and use both codes, you’ll save $110!

How do I get the GRE Summer Sale discount?

Use the code “GRE602023” at checkout to get $60 off the registration fee for your first GRE test taken before September 20, 2023.

If you choose to retest before December 31, 2023, use the code “GRE502023” for an additional $50 off your second GRE test. You must use the first “GRE602023” code to qualify for the second “GRE502023” code.

How long does the GRE Summer Sale last?

The $60 off code is valid for any test date before September 20, 2023, so that’s when you’ll need to take your GRE in order to qualify for the sale.

The additional $50 off is valid for any second test date before December 31st, 2023, so long as you used the first code for your first test date.

Can I use the GRE Summer Sale code with the new shorter GRE exam?

Yes, but only on the retest portion. At first, when you sign up for your first GRE exam before September 20, 2023, you will be taking the old and longer version of the GRE exam. You cannot use your “GRE602023” code to sit for the new shorter GRE exam because the new exam is not released until September 23, 2023.

However, once you’ve taken your first GRE exam before September 20, 2023, you can use the “GRE502023” code to get a discount on your retest with the new shorter GRE exam between September 23rd and December 31st, 2023.

Can I use this promotion to take the new, shorter GRE earlier than September 23, 2023?

No. If you use the “GRE502023” code to sit for a GRE exam before September 23, 2023, it will still be the old, longer GRE exam format.

Can I take the old, longer GRE after September 23, 2023?

No, all GRE examinations, including those affected by this promotion, will be switched to the new, shorter GRE on September 23rd, 2023.

Wrapping up

During times of change, it’s important to leverage that change to your advantage and not be caught flat footed. If you were planning to take the GRE between August and September 20th, you still should – and this just gave you even more reason to do so. If you weren’t sure, take a look at the old and new GRE formats to see which test will be better for you.
