The subject of men’s health receives far too little attention—almost none. While most health problems are common to both men and women, some afflictions are either exclusive to men or are more familiar to them. Some afflictions exhibit different symptoms in them. Knowing men’s top health problems is the first step in being proactive toward well-being.


1. Heart disease

Heart disease is the number one killer of men, who can develop it without warning symptoms. Coronary artery disease and heart failure are linked with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise. Watch out for chest pains, shortness of breath, and unusual fatigue. Prevention requires a good diet, regular exercise, and stress management.


2. High blood pressure (hypertension)


The second most severe condition facing men is high blood pressure, more technically known as hypertension. It’s commonly known as the “silent killer” when the condition is not detected early enough. Men 40 and older are advised to frequently check their blood pressure, maintain a healthy, low-salt diet, and exercise.


3. Mental health


Mental health is a facet of men’s health that receives little attention. Although everyone can become a victim of stress, anxiety, or depression, there are times when some ill-conceived notions in society prevent men from seeking help. Some common signs of mental problems include changes in mood, irritability, and withdrawal from society. Men should be free to express themselves emotionally and to seek help from friends, family, or professionals if need be—without fear or stigma.


4. Obesity


Obesity predisposes men to heart disease, diabetes, and joint problems. Of all the health problems men are prone to, excess weight at the midriff is a particularly worrying risk. A man must keep his weight and waist size in check. A proper diet with portion control, coupled with regular exercise, helps maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risks associated with overweight and obesity.


5. Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition characterized by decreased effectiveness of insulin metabolism and a subsequent increase in blood sugar levels. Men with a hereditary history of diabetes, those who are overweight, and those living a relatively sedentary way of life are most at risk for this disease. Even minor symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, or being too tired should draw attention. Early diagnosis, with blood sugar screening, is essential—more so in a man over 45. A healthy diet, together with physical activity, helps prevent and treat diabetes.


6. Problems in breathing


One of the major concerns for men, especially those with a heavy smoking history or those who are frequently exposed to environmental pollutants, is respiratory disorders such as COPD or asthma. Red flags related to respiratory health include chronic cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Healthy lungs mandate quitting smoking and vaping, and if you have any difficulty breathing, you should see your physician.


7. Digestive health


Digestive problems—like acid reflux, stomach ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome—are daily issues that can alter men’s quality of life. Big players in digestive health include stress and dietary and lifestyle considerations. Common warning signs are frequent heartburn, abdominal pain, or a change in the pattern of bowel movements. Adequate fiber intake, a regular pattern of meals, and proper stress management all help to keep the digestive tract running smoothly.


8. Skin cancer


Skin cancer is particularly prevalent among men who have spent a considerable part of their lives outdoors with no adequate protection from the sun. Exposure to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds is a crucial risk factor for skin cancer. Check your skin regularly for any new or changing moles or spots, and see a doctor as soon as possible if you notice anything unusual. Look after your skin and prevent skin cancer by using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and staying out of the sun during peak hours.


9. Liver health


The liver represents an organ of great importance for the organism’s health. For example, excessive fat in the liver and hepatitis are dangerous. Consuming large amounts of alcohol, poor nutrition, and problems with infections—all relate to issues with the liver. Yellowing of the skin, fatigue, and abdominal pains are some of the warning signs. Reduction of alcohol intake, proper diet, and regular medical check-ups are part of maintaining liver health.


10. Joint and bone health

Joint and bone disorders like arthritis and osteoporosis very often bring about severe restrictions on a man’s mobility and quality of life in general. When aging, these can cause sickness, stiffness, and an increased risk of fractures. Men should, therefore, be sensitive to their joint pain, stiffness, or swelling and opt for regular bone density screening with age. Weight-bearing exercise, balanced calcium and vitamin D intake, and a healthy weight can ensure healthy joints and bones.
